With Spring weather finally here, kids and grownups are charging outdoors to get out and enjoy it.. Here in Rochester, the gardening and yard work has been underway for many households and ticks have already been found dropping off clothing or clinging to exposed arms and legs.
So here it is. It is not FUN but it is the latest recommendation for protection against ticks. If you are going for a walk in the woods, through fields of grass or even your own back yard, entomologists urge that we wear pants tucked into socks. If this is not possible or practical, CHECK YOURSELF AND EACH OTHER standing on a white towel or light colored surface (like a tile floor) and start with the LEGS because most ticks crawl UP from grass or brush. We used to think ticks would be hiding in our hair but apparently our legs, especially thighs, are the most common place to find them. Deer ticks live on mice so keep mice away from your property. Birdseed is a favorite so keep it contained and sweep around bird feeders. If you decide to have your yard treated for ticks, there are several local companies which offer non-toxic treatments. Applications are about $150 each and several applications are recommended to cover the season (into Fall). |
